  • DAY 240: Isra 53-60

Tell My servants that they should speak that which is best. Surely, Satan creates discord among them. Indeed, Satan is an open enemy to mankind. Your Lord knows you best. If He so wills, He will have mercy on you, and if He so wills, He will punish you, and We did not send you (O Prophet,) to become responsible for them. Your Lord knows best all those in the heavens and the earth. And We have surely favoured some prophets above others, and to David We gave the Zabūr. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Invoke those you claim ˹to be divine˺ besides Him—they do not have the power to undo harm from you or transfer it ˹to someone else˺.” ˹Even˺ the closest ˹to Allah˺ of those invoked would be seeking a way to their Lord, hoping for His mercy, and fearing His punishment. Indeed, your Lord’s torment is fearsome. There is not a ˹wicked˺ society that We will not destroy or punish with a severe torment before the Day of Judgment. That is written in the Record. Nothing keeps Us from sending the ˹demanded˺ signs except that they had ˹already˺ been denied by earlier peoples. And We gave Thamûd the she-camel as a clear sign, but they wrongfully rejected it. We only send the signs as a warning. And ˹remember, O  Prophet˺ when We told you, “Certainly your Lord encompasses the people.” And We have made what We brought you to see as well as the cursed tree ˹mentioned˺ in the Quran only as a test for the people. We keep warning them, but it only increases them greatly in defiance.

Social Ethics: The importance of gracious speech to thwart Satan's divisive plans.
        Theology:
Reaffirming Allah's knowledge, the futility of polytheism, and the status of prophets.
Theology of Revelation: Explaining the divine wisdom behind not granting overwhelming signs—it is a mercy to allow time for repentance and to preserve free will, not a lack of power.
        The Purpose of Trials:
Miracles and warnings are a test (fitnah) that separates the believer from the disbeliever, revealing what is already in the hearts.

This passage establishes that gracious speech is the believer's defense against Satan's discord, clarifies that prophets were sent to warn rather than to compel belief, and reveals the profound wisdom in God withholding overwhelming signs: to preserve free will and make faith a choice, not an inevitability.
