  •  And ˹remember˺ when Moses said to his people, “Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow.” They replied, “Are you mocking us?” Moses responded, “I seek refuge in Allah from acting foolishly!” They said, “Call upon your Lord to clarify for us what type ˹of cow˺ it should be!” He replied, “Allah says, ‘The cow should neither be old nor young but in between. So do as you are commanded!’” They said, “Call upon your Lord to specify for us its colour.” He replied, “Allah says, ‘It should be a bright yellow cow—pleasant to see.’” Again they said, “Call upon your Lord so that He may make clear to us which cow, for all cows look the same to us. Then, Allah willing, we will be guided ˹to the right one˺.” He replied, “Allah says, ‘It should have been used neither to till the soil nor water the fields; wholesome and without blemish.’” They said, “Now you have come with the truth.” Yet they still slaughtered it hesitantly! ˹This is˺ when a man was killed and you disputed who the killer was, but Allah revealed what you concealed. So We instructed, “Strike the dead body with a piece of the cow.” This is how ˹easily˺ Allah brings the dead to life, showing you His signs so that you may understand.

    This is one of the strangest and deepest stories in the Quran. A man is murdered. The tribe knows who did it but won't confess. They ask Moses to ask Allah for a solution. The answer? Slaughter a cow. But not just any cow — a specific one. And they make it so difficult on themselves that it almost becomes impossible.
    Let's break it down with the human angle — because this story is really about avoiding responsibility, asking pointless questions, and how God cuts through our games.

    Obedience vs. Avoidance    They could have slaughtered any cow. Their questions made it harder. Don't ask for details just to delay action.
    God's commands sometimes seem absurd    "Slaughter a cow to solve a murder?" Makes no sense — until it does. Trust the process.
    Reluctant obedience is better than none    They almost didn't do it — but they did. And the miracle came after obedience, not before.
    Resurrection is real    A dead man came back to life. If that can happen, so can Judgment Day.
    Your excuses don't fool God    "Cows look alike to us" — God knew they were lying. He gave them exactly what they asked for.
    The hypocrites (2:8–20) asked pointless questions to avoid commitment.    The Israelites asked pointless questions to avoid slaughtering a cow.
    The Children of Israel broke covenants (2:40–59).    Here they almost break another command — but finally obey.
    The Sabbath-breakers turned into apes (2:65) because they outsmarted God.    These people almost outsmarted themselves into an impossible task.
    
    God commanded them to slaughter any cow — but their endless questions turned a simple test into a nearly impossible one, and when they finally obeyed reluctantly, the dead came back to life, proving that obedience unlocks miracles, and excuses only make things harder.
