DAY 477: Baqarah 165-167
- Still there are some who take others as Allah’s equal—they love them as
they should love Allah—but the ˹true˺ believers love Allah even more. If
only the wrongdoers could see the ˹horrible˺ punishment ˹awaiting
them˺, they would certainly realize that all power belongs to Allah and
that Allah is indeed severe in punishment. ˹Consider the Day˺ when those who misled others will disown their
followers—when they face the torment—and the bonds that united them will
be cut off. The ˹misled˺ followers will cry, “If only we could have a second chance,
we would disown them as they disowned us.” And so Allah will make them
remorseful of their misdeeds. And they will never ˹be able to˺ leave the
Fire.

These three verses describe a catastrophic realization on the Day of Judgment. Some people who worshipped others besides Allah — whether idols, leaders, saints, or desires — will see the punishment and suddenly wish they could disown their false gods. But it's too late. The leaders and the followers will blame each other. And they will realize that the "love" they had for their false objects of worship was nothing compared to the love they should have had for Allah.
This is a sobering passage about misplaced love, following the wrong leaders, and the regret that comes when the truth is undeniable.
165 Some love false equals as Allah should be loved. Believers love Allah more. What you love most will either save you or destroy you.
166 Leaders disown followers on Judgment Day. All ties are cut. The people you followed will abandon you when it matters most.
167 Followers wish for another chance — but it's too late. Deeds become regrets. "If only" is the most painful phrase. Don't wait until it's too late.
On the Day when all ties are cut, the leaders will disown the followers, the followers will wish for another chance to disown their leaders, but their deeds will become nothing but regrets — because they loved what was not worthy of love, and that love destroyed them.
