( نَجْزِي c-z-y kökü -> (transitive) To return (usually something figurative) that has been given; to repay; to recompense
“ اَلجُْزْء “ُ (jaza’oon), “ جَازِيَۃ ” (jaaziah): the return for something.
جَزَاه کَذَاوبہٖ وعَليَْہِ “ ” (jaza-hu kazaubehi alaih): he replied to something in such a way that {T}.
مُجَازَاة “ٌ ” (mujazah): to give return to each other. Ordinarily, it is used to mean a return for bad things while “ مُکَافَاة ” (makafa’ah) is used for good things.
Ibn Faris says its basic meaning is to replace i.e. for one thing to be in another’s place.
This meaning points to a great truth. What is considered to be the result of deeds is actually the ‘natural’ result of that deed, that is, the result replaces the deed. If you put your hand into the fire, it is your act, your hand is burnt and it is very painful, this is the result of your act. The act ended soon but it was replaced by the result. This brings the Quranic concept of reward and punishment (jaza and saza) to the fore. According to this concept, neither reward comes from somewhere outside, or punishment. You abuse someone, he slaps you, and this punishment is from the outside because the abuse and slap have no connection. But if you eat poison and then die, this is a result of your act. In other words the result
replaces the act.LUQ)
