• DAY 500: Anfal 38-44

  •  Tell the disbelievers that if they desist, their past will be forgiven. But if they persist, then they have an example in those destroyed before them. Fight against them until there is no more persecution—and ˹your˺ devotion will be entirely to Allah. But if they desist, then surely Allah is All-Seeing of what they do. And if they do not comply, then know that Allah is your Protector. What an excellent Protector, and what an excellent Helper! Know that whatever spoils you take, one-fifth is for Allah and the Messenger, his close relatives, orphans, the poor, and ˹needy˺ travellers, if you ˹truly˺ believe in Allah and what We revealed to Our servant on that decisive day when the two armies met ˹at Badr˺. And Allah is Most Capable of everything. ˹Remember˺ when you were on the near side of the valley, your enemy on the far side, and the caravan was below you. Even if the two armies had made an appointment ˹to meet˺, both would have certainly missed it. Still it transpired so Allah may establish what He had destined—that those who were to perish and those who were to survive might do so after the truth had been made clear to both. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. ˹Remember, O  Prophet,˺ when Allah showed them in your dream as few in number. Had He shown them to you as many, you ˹believers˺ would have certainly faltered and disputed in the matter. But Allah spared you ˹from that˺. Surely He knows best what is ˹hidden˺ in the heart. Then when your armies met, Allah made them appear as few in your eyes, and made you appear as few in theirs, so Allah may establish what He had destined. And to Allah ˹all˺ matters will be returned ˹for judgment˺.

    These verses continue directly from the previous section. After describing the disbelievers' plots, their empty worship, and their spending to block Islam (v30–37), Allah now gives a clear warning and an ultimatum to the Quraysh, followed by a detailed description of the Battle of Badr as a divine act of separation.
    v29 – Taqwa brings furqan (criterion), forgiveness, and great bounty.
    v30–37 – The Quraysh plotted, mocked the Quran, spent wealth to block Islam. Their worship was empty. They will be heaped into Hell.
    v38–40 – Ultimatum: Cease or face destruction. Fight until fitnah ends. Allah is your Protector.
    v41 – Spoils distribution law (khums) for those who believe in the Day of Criterion (Badr).
    v42–44 – The Battle of Badr: Unexpected timing, perfect divine planning, visual miracles that gave confidence to believers and misled the disbelievers. All to accomplish what was already destined.
    38    Ultimatum to Quraysh    If they cease hostility, forgiveness. If they return, destruction like previous nations.
    39    Purpose of fighting    Fight until there is no fitnah (persecution/shirk) and religion is for Allah. If they stop, stop.
    40    Divine protection    If they turn away, Allah is your Protector and Helper — the best of all.
    41    Distribution of spoils    1/5 for Allah, Prophet, relatives, orphans, needy, wayfarer — if you believe in the Day of Criterion (Badr).
    42    Unexpected meeting    You didn't plan to meet at Badr, but Allah destined it — so that victory and death would come with clear evidence.
    43    Prophet's dream    Allah showed the enemy as few in the Prophet's dream to prevent fear and dispute.
    44    Visual miracle on battlefield    Allah made each army appear small to the other — to accomplish His decree without panic or overconfidence.
    
    The Battle of Badr was not a coincidence but a carefully orchestrated divine event: Allah gave the Quraysh a final ultimatum, defined the purpose of fighting (ending fitnah), revealed the law of spoils as a test of faith, and then showed His control over perception itself — making armies appear small or large — to accomplish His decree with clear evidence, so that no one would have an excuse on Judgment Day.
