• DAY 485: Baqarah 216-220

  •  Fighting has been made obligatory upon you ˹believers˺, though you dislike it. Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you and like something which is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know. They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about fighting in the sacred months. Say, “Fighting during these months is a great sin. But hindering ˹others˺ from the Path of Allah, rejecting Him, and expelling the worshippers from the Sacred Mosque is ˹a˺ greater ˹sin˺ in the sight of Allah. For persecution is far worse than killing. And they will not stop fighting you until they turn you away from your faith—if they can. And whoever among you renounces their own faith and dies a disbeliever, their deeds will become void in this life and in the Hereafter. It is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.”  Surely those who have believed, emigrated, and struggled in the Way of Allah—they can hope for Allah’s mercy. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about intoxicants and gambling. Say, “There is great evil in both, as well as some benefit for people—but the evil outweighs the benefit.”¹ They ˹also˺ ask you ˹O Prophet˺ what they should donate. Say, “Whatever you can spare.” This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you ˹believers˺, so perhaps you may reflect upon this world and the Hereafter. And they ask you ˹O Prophet˺ concerning orphans. Say, “Improving their condition is best. And if you partner with them, they are bonded with you ˹in faith˺. And Allah knows who intends harm and who intends good. Had Allah willed, He could have made it difficult for you. Surely Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.”

    After the discussion of spending and charity (215), and the warning about jealousy and oppression (213–214), Allah now addresses difficult commands that people naturally dislike: fighting is prescribed even though you hate it. Then a profound principle: "You may hate something while it is good for you, and you may love something while it is bad for you. Allah knows, and you do not know."
    You will be commanded to do things you don't want to do. Defend yourself. Speak truth when silence is safer. Cut off a relationship that is destroying you. These are hard. But your hatred of them does not make them wrong. And your love of comfort, ease, and approval does not make them right. Feelings are not facts. Allah knows. You don't.
    Don't get lost in small technicalities while ignoring massive injustices.
    Wine and gambling have benefits. Intoxication can be pleasurable. Gambling can bring quick money. But the harm — addiction, destroyed families, lost judgment, wasted wealth — outweighs the benefit. That's the principle: anything whose harm outweighs its good is forbidden. And when it comes to spending: you don't have to give everything. Give the surplus. Keep enough to live. Give the rest. That's the balance.
    
    Taking care of orphans is a sacred trust. You can mix your wealth with theirs — but your intention matters. Are you helping them, or exploiting them? Allah knows. And remember: the rules could have been harder. They are not. So be grateful, and be just. Because the Mighty and Wise One is watching.
    
    216    Fighting prescribed — you hate it, but perhaps you hate what is good for you    Your feelings are not reliable guides. Allah knows; you don't.
    217    Sacred month — fighting is sin, but oppression (fitnah) is worse than killing    Hierarchy of evil: oppression > killing. Don't miss the bigger crime.
    218    Those who believe, emigrate, and fight — they expect Allah's mercy    The path is hard, but mercy is near. Hope, not entitlement.
    219    Wine and gambling — great sin with some benefit, but sin outweighs benefit. Spend the surplus.    Harm outweighing benefit = forbidden. Spending = surplus, not everything.
    220    Orphans — improving their condition is best. Mixing wealth is allowed. Allah knows the corrupter from the reformer.    Intentions matter. Allah sees who helps and who exploits.
    
    Fighting is prescribed even though you hate it — because you may hate what is good for you; fighting in sacred months is sinful, but oppression is worse than killing; wine and gambling have some benefit but their sin is greater; spend the surplus, not everything; and when it comes to orphans, improve their condition, for Allah knows who is a reformer and who is a corrupter.
