DAY 483: Baqarah 204-212
- There are some ˹hypocrites˺ who
impress you with their views regarding
worldly affairs and openly call upon Allah to witness what is in their
hearts, yet they are your worst adversaries. And when they leave
˹you˺, they strive throughout the land to spread mischief in it and
destroy crops and cattle. Allah does not like mischief. When it is said
to them, “Fear Allah,” pride carries them off to sin.
Hell will be their proper place. What an evil place to rest! And there
are those who would dedicate their lives to Allah’s pleasure. And Allah
is Ever Gracious to ˹His˺ servants. O believers! Enter into Islam
wholeheartedly and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. Surely he is your
sworn enemy. If you falter after receiving the clear proofs, then know
that Allah is indeed Almighty, All-Wise. Are they waiting for Allah
˹Himself˺ to come to them in the shade of
clouds, along with the angels? ˹If He did˺, then the matter would be
settled ˹at once˺. And to Allah ˹all˺ matters will be returned ˹for
judgment˺. Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We have given
them. And
whoever trades Allah’s favour—after receiving it—˹for disbelief˺ should
know that Allah is indeed severe in punishment. The life of this world
has been made appealing to the disbelievers, and
they mock the believers. Those who are mindful ˹of Allah˺ will rank
above them on the Day of Judgment. And Allah provides for whoever He
wills without limit.
(
After the beautiful description of Hajj and remembrance, Allah now exposes a specific type of hypocrite — one who speaks beautifully, impresses you with his words, but is actually a fierce enemy. Then contrasts him with the sincere believer who spends seeking God's approval. Then a reminder that worldly life is fleeting, and that those who deny the truth take the disbelievers as allies. Finally, a powerful rhetorical question: "Is the one who walks fallen on his face better guided than the one who walks upright on a straight path?"
The entire surah is a study in human types. Tonight adds a new layer: the charismatic hypocrite — the one you might actually like because he sounds so good.
The surah began by introducing the hypocrite as the most dangerous person. Now, after all the lessons — Abraham, the qibla, patience, Hajj, fasting — Allah returns to the hypocrite to remind you: This person is still among you. Don't be fooled by his words.
204 Hypocrite with sweet words — impresses you but is a fierce enemy Eloquence is not integrity. Beware the honeyed tongue.
205 When he gains power, he spreads corruption — destroys crops and livestock Corrupt people ruin the systems that keep people alive.
206 When advised to fear Allah, pride in sin takes hold. Hell awaits. The worst person is proud of his sin.
207 The sincere believer sells himself seeking Allah's approval Some people give everything for a cause — not for show, but for truth.
208 Enter into submission completely — do not follow Satan's footsteps No half-submission. Wholeness. Integrity.
209 If you slip after clear proofs — Allah is Mighty, Wise After truth is clear, turning away has no excuse.
210 Are they waiting for Judgment Day? Don't wait for a dramatic sign. The signs are already here.
211 Ask the Children of Israel — they had clear signs and exchanged them History warns us. Don't repeat the same mistake.
212 World is beautified for disbelievers — they mock believers. But on Resurrection, the righteous are above them. The world is attractive. But it fades. The tables turn.
Beware the hypocrite with sweet words who spreads corruption when in power — do not follow Satan's footsteps, enter submission completely, do not slip after clear proofs, and remember that the world is beautified for the disbelievers who mock the believers, but on the Day of Resurrection, the tables turn and the righteous are above them.
